    I do not have an image of the original as a comparison, I only had a color copy made from the book and the book itself and I have not been able to locate an image online. I have included below a few examples of images from a similar time and style. If you get the inkling go to Google Images and search for Picasso 1908 and then search for Picaso 1909 and see how drastically the styles change. Picasso is interesting in the way that his style continued to evolve but in general he always enjoyed the same subject matter.

EDM 002 - Draw a Lamp ...

A flashlight is a lamp... right?

A while back i joined a group called Everyday Matters, it is an online community for sharing artwork. Each week a challenge is posted. The idea is to draw an everyday object and then post the picture for the community. The community has been active for a while so there is quite a backlog of challenges for me to work on. I am going to start posting my sketches when I can.

EDM001 - Draw a Shoe.

So Spring semester of 2009 I needed a class that was only offered during the day. I made the arrangements at work to go to the class, but here's the kicker I get counted as a Day student and not a Night student and all of a sudden they are asking for an extra 7K in tuition... Well i did get a scholarship and additional grant money and a couple extra loans but decided that I ought to get my money's worth and added an Art class, nothing difficult ARTS 100, Intro to Studio Arts.The class ended up being as easy and enjoyable as expected and I got an A despite skipping both of the papers.

The first project was a collage, with the theme, "A Sense of Place,"  I hadn't really done any collage type work since a Design class I took that I like to call "Intro to Cut and Paste" followed by "Advanced Sharp Objects"  I didn't do as well in "Advanced Sharp Object, but I still have all my fingers and the scars are almost gone.

My idea for this project was the idea of a river that comes through all the parts of life. Not only is on the river somewhere that I've spent a measurable portion of my life but the river is also symbolic as a source of life. There are five sections that are represented. I will refer to them (top to bottom) as Sky, Mountains, Forest, Desert, and Grassland.

Overall I think it was pretty successful, nothing to write home about, but successful. I may have to do a blog on the word successful in art. I like the way the grassland and desert areas turned out, along with the contrast between the flat and textured areas. I could have done more in the forest and sky areas and I wish I'd found more texture pieces for the mountain area, or maybe done what I did with the grasslands and made some with paint.

The areas I like the most all had repeated shapes in the textures, with the grassland area i even stenciled in the shape a few times with paint which looks really neat. 

So anyone who has looked at the date on my last update might notice that, well, it's been a while. A lot has been going on. Mostly working on finishing my degree which will be done in December, but I have been doing some artwork and I'll be getting that up. In addition to finished peices I hope to start blogging regularly with sketches and works in progress.

I am also hoping to start working through some practice sketches and work on honing some of my skills. There will also be some changes to the site as I make them, the biggest being the new skin that I am quite fond of.

Sometimes I find myself with pieces that I've spent time arguing with, fixing, changing or what ever and there comes a point where you decide that it is good enough, not good enough to give away or sell but good enough to call complete and say that you are finished, look at it for a few weeks and then paint over the canvas. This is the dirty underbelly of artistry the unseen part all the paintings are works that are never seen or appreciate except perhaps by those who have stopped by the studio when the artist is at work or the teacher who makes you take it to the end even if you are going to paint over it. I've had my share of these, but I've decided that it is time to make them a home. So even when they get painted over I can still go back and look at them.


It is sort of like a graveyard a way of preserving the memory even though the painting is under layers of gesso...either that or  a DVD bonus feature where you see the blooper reel, but because these don't usually make me laugh, I'm going to stick with a graveyard. and when I get around to it these will get their own gallery but at this point there is only one that I've bothered taking a picture of so it will be a small gallery.

6/9/09 ETA: This painting apparently hasn't made it to the graveyard yet, it is still sitting uncovered in my hallway.

I haven't made many updates to the site lately. I've been pretty busy and haven't gotten much painting done, also I'm waiting on my tech guy to work up the new skin for me. Once I'm done the site should load and run much faster and look nicer. <br /><br />Here is a shot of the painting I've been working on. This is a monochromatic piece and the paint is a fairly transparent brown and it takes quite a bit to get it built up so there is some real depth, at the moment I think he looks a bit like a primate but hopefully some more shading and detailing will help that out..

Not much new, but we do have a work in progress shot.

I havent found much time to work on the page for a while, there have been a few bugs that are working out. However I did find time to start a new painting, This will be a painting of Commodore Norrington from Pirates of the Caribbean 2, where he is all scraggly looking, I started it once and didn't like how it was coming out so I sstarted over, I'm happy with the new one, this is going to be sepia toned, and after about half an hour I figured out that it will take quite a while to build up the really dark tones with the brown, oh well, there is purpose behind the madness... It is apparently one of those exercises in control and patience.

Today I created and uploaded the first of the paintings to the Gallery, the description for each painting will give availability status, for nudes a login process and a confirmation of being the age of majority will apply, this will be set up at a later date. For the time being they are cropped as to be appropriate and are in the main gallery. Tonight I started a new painting. I started with a b/w line drawing and went from there.
